Valentino Garavani was  born May 11th, 1932 in Voghera, Lombarty, northern Italy. In primary school Valentino became interested in fashion where he apprenticed  under his aunt Rosa and a local designer Ernestina Salvadeo. At age 17 Valentino moved to Paris with the help of his parents Teresa de Biaggi and Mauro Garavani. In Paris he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Valentino had numerous apprenticeship’s in Paris, notably Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Desses, Guy Laroche. Valentino was know for his fascination with red fabrics and that he made  lots of sketches working with clients. With the aid of his parents he moved to Rome, Italy in 1959 to set up his first house of design with an investor, associate of his father.   This business relationship ended almost as quickly as it began because Valentino was know to have a penchant for extravagant spending. To the rescue came Giancarlo Giammetti who brought a business sense and financing  escaping bankruptcy.  Valentino’s 1962 international fashion debut in Florence, the Italian fashion capital of the time, proved to be an extremely successful venue which resulted in a deluge of orders coming from the best dressed woman of international high society. A few of the these woman included Countess Jacqueline de Ribes and New York socialites Babe Paley and Jayne Wrightsman. By the mid 1960′s Valentino was considered the undisputed maestro of Italian couture with a long list of new high society customers. They include Princess Margret, Marisa Berenson, Marelia Agnelli, Gloria Guiness, Audry Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Babe Paley, Queen Paola of Belgium, Lee Radzill, Jacquine Kennedy Onassis, Farah Dibi and more. Valentino and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti in 1998 sold the company to HdP, an Italian conglomerate where he remained in control of creative design.Â
